CAPE TOWN - Humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers said a team is on the way to Wellington to assist close to two thousand foreign nationals who fled their homes due to alleged xenophobic threats.

They were allegedly chased away by angry community members of New Rest on Wednesday.

It is believed that the threats were sparked after a brawl between a local resident and a foreign national turned deadly over the weekend.

Police said that they were called in to evacuate the foreign nationals to a place of safety.

"Women and children are currently being accommodated at a local hall under police guard while the men are seeking refuge at the local police station. Credit due to the swift response by the SAPS in evacuating the foreign nationals in the informal settlement and preventing the looting and burning of foreign shops" said Gift of the Givers Spokesperson Ali Sablay.
