CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Community Safety MEC Reagen Allen said the first payout for reporting an illegal firearm has been made.

The recipient received R3,000 for reporting the illegal firearm in December 2023 at the Gansbaai police station.

Police quickly acted on the tipoff and confiscated the gun and ammunition.

The suspect is due back in court on 27 March.

Allen said should there be a conviction in this matter, the beneficiary will receive a further R2,000.

"My sincere gratitude goes to the individual for filing this report and ensuring that we could get another illegal firearm off our streets. It is brave citizenry such as this that we as the Western Cape Government seek to reward.

"Collaborative efforts such as these are undoubtedly assisting in ensuring greater safety is achieved across our province," Allen added.
