The department is encouraging parents and guardians to approach organisations that can assist their children with necessary interventions.

World Hearing Day: WC Social Development encourages destigmatisation of deafness

CAPE TOWN - Sunday marks World Hearing Day. 

To mark the occasion, the Western Cape Department of Social Development has called on parents with babies who show signs of hearing or speech difficulty to pay closer attention.

According to the department, the World Health Organization is appealing to communities to find out more about people living with a disability.

It it also targeting public and health institutions to raise awareness and share information to end the stigma about deafness and other disabilities.

The department is encouraging parents and guardians to approach organisations that can assist their children with necessary interventions.

"Families and communities should also be mindful of stigmas and misconceptions related to hearing and ear problems. This also includes individuals who have recently learned they are deaf or hard of hearing," said department spokesperson Monique Mortlock-Malgas.

"Deaf SA Western Cape says being deaf is not a curse and there are many support resources available."
