JOHANNESBURG - The Motsepe Foundation has offered a 30-million-rand cash injection to help struggling university students with their fees.

This comes as students in the higher education sector continue to face financial challenges.

A lack of access to funding has often led to hundreds of tertiary students being locked out of the gates at some of the country's higher learning institutions.

The foundation recently met with student leaders from 26 of the country’s universities.

By the end of the universities in dialogue meeting in Sandton, the foundation handed over cheques to student representative councils totaling 30-million-rand.

The funds will assist in paying off registration fees, tuition and historical debt.

The academic year is underway at some of the country's universities however some students have still not been able to register as a result of financial constraints.

The Motsepe foundation says it hopes this will encourage more financial support for students from the private sector.
