CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town has called for the justice system to throw the book at criminals as high crime levels leave residents in parts of the city of edge.

This comes after a security guard was attacked along with a k-9 patrol dog while patrolling in one of the metro's construction sites in Philippi this week.

The injured official is currently recovering in hospital after being shot at by an alleged extortion syndicate demanding sub constructing services.

The city has also urged community members to protect development initiatives aimed at improving their areas.

The City's MMC for safety and security, JP Smith said "Once suspects are arrested and booked at SAPS the investigation process must follow through. We have said it before its up to the criminal justice system to be more effective and to see to it that criminals get their day in court."
