JOHANNESBURG - Newly formed political party Rise Mzansi said its policy decisions are not informed by its donors.

The party recently revealed that it received R16.7 million through donor funding as it campaigns to contest 2024’s general elections.

R15 million, which is the bulk of the money, came from billionaire entrepreneur, Rebecca Oppenheimer.

Rise Mzansi’s national chairperson, Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, said their funders believe in the party's vision.

"They want to see us deliver our vision, which is a safe, equal, prosperous, and united South Africa in one generation, and in fact, we need even more money, quite frankly."

Ramokgopa called for more political parties to follow in their footsteps and declare their list of donors.

"What this generous donor is but a drop in the ocean compared to what our political opponents are working with, and unfortunately for us, they don't declare.

"So, we are dealing with a lot of clandestine funding that is undeclared. People are throwing big stadium parties and not declaring anything."
