JOHANNESBURG - The Hawks said that more than 720 suspects were arrested across the country in the third quarter of the current financial year.
 
The unit's leadership on Monday released its statistics for the period spanning September to November 2023.
 
They indicate that a total of 724 suspects were handcuffed during this period, down from 801 in the previous quarter.
 
The records show that the vast majority of those arrested by the Hawks during the period under review - 582 or 82.5% - were South Africans.
 
Meanwhile, when it comes to the crimes for which they were arrested the largest portion were once again nabbed for fraud.

Contraband valued at a staggering R102.6 million was also seized during these arrests.
 
Over and above the arrests, the Hawks secured a total of 229 convictions during the period under review, again with the majority, a total of 63, being for fraud.
