Nongoma residents urged to refrain from crossing overflowing rivers following heavy rains

CAPE TOWN - The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance has urged residents from Nongoma - north of the province, to refrain from crossing overflowing rivers.
This after the area was severely hit by heavy rains on Friday.
Over 600 people were affected, with 78 households damaged and three others completely destroyed.
No injuries or fatalities were reported.
The department's spokesperson, Siboniso Mngadi:
"Trail destruction caused damage to households, public infrastructure such as schools, community hall, church, and Eskom power lines. The provincial disaster management teams have been conducting assessments in different areas of Nongoma to determine the extent of the damage caused by the inclement weather."
Mngadi added that affected households were receiving assistance.
"Our provincial disaster management teams under the Zululand District have been distributing disaster relief such as tents, water drums, and plastic sheeting. We are also conducting a beneficiary list of all victims is being finalised to be submitted to the relevant department."
