JOHANNESBURG - Some consumer gurus have warned shoppers to avoid digging themselves deeper into debt as Valentine’s Day approaches.

The warning comes ahead of an expected surge in sales at some retail stores on Wednesday.

While Cupid is ready with his bow and arrow, consumer experts are warning shoppers to slow down at the tills before making big purchases.

Valentine’s Day is around the corner and it’s a special day to celebrate and show up for your loved ones.

Operations manager for FNB Consumer Education Pearl Cele said you can still make the day special by using five steps to keep it simple.

First up, Cele said hold off on spending money you didn’t budget for and avoid buying gifts on credit.

The key is to plan ahead - which Cele said would help prevent you from over-extending yourself and your budget.

It might also help cushion your pockets if you hunt for bargains and specials by using loyalty programmes.

Instead of going to a restaurant, get creative with your menu at home or opt for a cheaper option like a picnic.

It’s the thought that counts not the price tag.
