JOHANNESBURG - Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a grade one pupil who died after allegedly eating biscuits reportedly bought from a spaza shop in Tsakane.

The Gauteng Department of Education said the Mandlethu Primary School pupil started feeling ill in class on Tuesday before vomiting.

It's understood the parents of the child confirmed that she had eaten biscuits from a local store.

Spokesperson Xolani Mkhwebu said paramedics declared her dead on arrival.

"We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. We plead with parents to be vigilant concerning the edible goods that their children consume.

"We call upon law enforcement agencies and municipalities to be more stringent on compliance matters related to spaza shop products."
