JOHANNESBURG - Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa has described trailblazing musician Tyla as a global superstar after winning her first Grammy Award.

The Johannesburg-born artist snagged Best African Music Performance for her hit song Water, which made waves on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first South African solo artist in 55 years to be featured in the chart since Hugh Masekela.

The minister's spokesperson Litha Mpondwana joined the chorus of South Africans congratulating the 22-year-old artist.

"Tyla’s Grammy award win once again confirms her status as a music global superstar. Her meteoric success has been truly inspiring, and there is so much more to come."
  
The minister also congratulated several artists who proudly showcased South Africa on the global stage at the 66th Grammy Awards held in California on Sunday.
  
"South Africa had a notable presence at the Grammys, with Trevor Noah hosting the awards for a fourth time, and nominated for “Best Comedy Album”. Acapella group Just 6 was nominated in the “Best Arrangement, Instrumental or Acapella” category, while Musa Keys was nominated was nominated for “Best African Performance” for his collaboration with Nigerian artist Davido."

Western Cape Cultural Affairs and Sport MEC Anroux Marais also congratulated Tyla, for becoming the youngest African artist to win a Grammy Award. 

Marais said the provincial government was excited to see the young singer continue to do great things in the music industry.

"The Western Cape Government wishes to congratulate Tyla on this amazing achievement. Once again, South Africa is making an impact on international stages, and this is testament to the talent that we have in our country. We are incredibly proud."
