JOHANNESBURG - A pupil who was first introduced to Eyewitness News in 2012 as a grade 1 learner matriculated as one of the top achievers in the class of 2023.

Koketso Mashao is one of Crawford International's top-performing pupils, 12 years after her parents allowed Eyewitness News to accompany her on her first day of big school.

Mashao’s gone from seeking a career as a professional swimmer, to now eyeing some of the country's top universities, where she wants to pursue mathematical statistics with the aim of becoming an actuarial scientist.

The matriculant also had this message for the class of 2024: “It's really easy to get lost in all the work and homework, but when you go back to your room at the end of the day, I don’t want any of us to suffer from burnout, or exhaustion, or anxiety.”

For her mother, Mpho, this was a worthwhile journey.

“I was the one panicking more than her. I’d be like: ‘Are you not studying? You’re in matric - you can't sleep!’, and you were like: ‘Mom, I got this’.”

They both promised to reach out to Eyewitness News when she graduates and gets her first job.
