JOHANNESBURG - Eleven suspects arrested in connection with Monday’s taxi-related shooting in the Eastern Cape are expected to appear in court on Thursday.

Three people were killed and six others injured at the Port St Johns taxi rank.

An 11-year-old innocent boy was among those injured when a stray bullet struck him during the exchange of bullets between members of the Lusikisiki and Port St Johns taxi associations.

The shooting was a result of an ongoing feud between members of the rival taxi associations.

A strong police presence is expected at the Port St Johns Magistrates Court ahead of their appearance.

The chairperson of the South African National Taxi Association (SANTACO) in the Eastern Cape, Bishop Yolelo, said they have addressed both associations.

“We will not rest until we resolve the matter. We will suffocate and then we will suppress any element of the violence in the province.”

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Lillian Mene said various firearms, including high-calibre weapons were recovered by police.

“We have deployed several police officers from various specialised units to ensure stability and the safety of everyone in that area.”

The suspects face charges of murder, attempted murder, malicious damage to property, discharging firearms in a built-up municipal area, and public violence.
