JOHANNESBURG - Matric learners who managed to step up to the multitude of challenges they faced and achieve results beyond all expectation say the key to their success is self-belief.

With the official announcement of the national senior certificate exams on Thursday, top achievers from different quintile schools in South Africa have shared what it took to make it as 2023's cream of the crop while offering advice to the class of 2024.

Meet South Africa’s top performing matriculants who persevered even when the alarm clock became a personal enemy and their school bags weighed more than their dreams.

Remonia Mbedzi from the Patrick Ramaano Secondary School in Limpopo said she was celebrating not only what she achieved but who she became in the process.

"There's a potential that I can get whenever I want to and I can do whatever I want, my dreams can come true, it will come true one day."

Western Cape pupil, Melissa Muller, from Rhenish Girls' High School said she kept going even when the last thing she wanted to see was a textbook.

"Personally, I'm extremely happy. I'm so glad that years of hard work has paid off, which speaks a lot to myself and my dreams."

As the final moments tick away, Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said that all matriculants had embodied the hopes and aspirations of their schools, families and communities.
