JOHANNESBURG - The Walter Sisulu University (WSU) says physical classes will be halted after the Easter break as management assesses the situation following tensions at the Mthatha campus.

A young man was shot and killed at the campus this week amid a student protest over the deplorable state of accommodation at some of the campus residences.

It’s believed Sisonke Mbolekwa was shot by a residence manager at the height of tensions on Tuesday.

Rubber bullets were fired at disgruntled students on Thursday when frustrations flared again.

Registrar at the Walter Sisulu University, Lulamile Ntonzima, says when academic activities resume after the easter break, classes will only be held virtually temporarily.

“We haven’t closed the university. We have shifted teaching and learning to online, from face-to-face, until the week of the first of May so that we can assess the situation.”

He says claims that students were asked to vacate the premises are untrue.

“The university is not closed. Students are staying at residences; they have not been evacuated. The university is not on shutdown.”
