The smash hit musical Chicago has returned to South African stages - the production opened in Cape Town, where it is running until 28 September, before moving to Johannesburg for its run from 3 October-9 November.
This jazz-filled spectacle brings the roaring 1920s to life with its thrilling tale of fame and fortune. Featuring iconic hits like All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango, and Razzle Dazzle, Chicago is a musical masterpiece packed with show-stopping performances, breathtaking choreography, and scandalous intrigue.
The legendary Bob Fosse directed and choreographed the original production, which debuted in the West End in 1979 and has been performed around the world ever since.
'There's just something about this show', affirms Jonathan Roxmouth, who portrays the role of Billy Flynn in the latest South African production.
While a lot of shows may remind you of Chicago, Chicago reminds you of nothing else, he says.
"The way this material is put together, the way it's presented on stage, the way it's designed.... And also, we can't undersell the fact that having a live jazz band on stage behind us all the way through changes the dynamic."

"It's really quite something to be part of it- I've done Billy before in 2018 in New Zealand and China, so it's nice to finally do it at home."

'Chicago is one of the most successful productions ever staged in South Africa – and the demand for its return is unwavering' says SA producer Hazel Feldman.
And this latest production rates as the best version she has ever seen, enthuses superfan Sara-Jayne.
The team has been in pre-production for two years, that is how long it takes, says resident director and choreographer Darren Greeff (Showtime Management).
"We have to make sure there are sets and costumes available, that the rights are available in the country, and it's a big administrative process before we actually get it into a casting process, and then into rehearsal on stage."

While it's the fourth time Showtime is presenting Chicago, there is something different every time, Greeff says.
"Each production is different because each cast brings a different element. Chicago is very personal to everybody in terms of where they are in their lives, the stories are personal to them... and that's what gives this long-running show its energy."
