MIDRAND - It has emerged that the woman who died in a fire that gutted an apartment block in Midrand was a mother of a newborn baby.
The woman's identity is still unknown but her body was found beneath the rubble of a collapsed roof.
Johannesburg EMS has confirmed that the fire started in her apartment at the Broadwalk Urban Village complex on Tuesday night.
Her body was recovered by the search and rescue team on Wednesday afternoon.
Distraught and displaced residents have gathered outside the charred building, unsure of what lies ahead.
Among them is Tebogo Seloane, a neighbour of the victim, who lost everything in the fire. He recounts his failed attempt to rescue her.
"The smoke was too thick, too strong. If I went in, I would’ve passed out. There was no way."
Seloane said that the victim lived with her five-month-old son and her boyfriend.
It seems the fire broke out on the top floor of the building, there was nobody in the unit. #Midrand @motso_modise pic.twitter.com/HQ1j33VRB5
