A Romanian woman, who took a 3.5kg stone from a nearby stream and used it as a doorstop didn't know it was worth €1 million (over R20 million).

After she died in 1991, her nephew inherited the house and suspected the doorstop could be more than it seemed.

It turns out the stone is an amber known as rumanite, a tree resin that got fossilised over a million years ago into a gemstone.

The stone was sold to the Romanian state, and it sits in the Provincial Museum of Buzau.

Experts estimate the amber was likely 40 to 80 million years old.

“I’d like to think that even though it's extremely expensive… maybe ultimately it’ll keep the museum door open to keep up the tradition.”
