WATCH: Elephant seal holds up traffic in Gordon's Bay
What an adventurous day for this chunky boy! “The situation is under control", reports Belinda Abraham of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.
Yes, a seal is on the loose!
On Tuesday (27 May) at around 7 am, an expected and seemingly sleepy visitor, an Elephant Seal, was spotted roaming the streets of a residential area in Sir Lowry's Pass Road.
Locals in the area were thrilled to congregate in the name of this elephant seal who reportedly wandered through their neighbourhood overnight, causing excitement, laughter, and lots of online chatter.
Traffic in the area also came to a standstill as the elephant seal took its neighbourhood tour, and authorities closed off Sir Lowry’s Pass Road to keep residents and the animal safe.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA Inspectors are on-site and actively working on a safe and stress-free plan to relocate this magnificent marine mammal.
"The situation is under control," reports Belinda Abraham from the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, along with the following updates:
- A coordinated rescue plan is currently in action in Gordon’s Bay to help the sub-adult male elephant seal safely return to his ocean home.
- The SPCA is waiting for a wildlife vet to arrive and safely sedate the seal for transport.
- The following organisations are also on-site for support: City of Cape Town’s Marine Unit with a large game capture trailer to facilitate transportation, representatives from SANParks, Two Oceans Aquarium, Shark Spotters, Law Enforcement - Traffic Services and SAPS, Gordon’s Bay Medical Ambulance Services and Gordon's Bay Security Services.
"The situation is currently under control. We are awaiting the arrival of a wildlife veterinarian who will sedate the seal for his safe return to his natural environment."
