Watch the space: How space weather impacts the 4th industrial revolution
The SANSA (South African National Space Agency) Space weather centre in Hermanus is the only space weather facility in Africa. SANSA staff monitor solar activities like sun flares and moving particles, which have a negative impact on communications and navigation systems on earth. These sun charges have the potential to trip electrical power grids, interrupt GPS systems and disrupt entire communication systems. Managing Director of SANSA Dr Lee-Anne McKinnell says better forecasting of atmospheric weather patterns will be key in mitigating vulnerabilities in the next revolution.
