Zalika Methula is making her highly anticipated return to the domestic stage at the upcoming Bombela Concession Company National Diving Championships, held in Boksburg from April 11–15.

The neuroscience student, who is balancing high-stakes academics with elite athletics, expressed confidence ahead of the event. “Training has been going great, just keeping myself mentally strong for the last push of the post-season,” Methula said.

The championships mark Methula’s first appearance at nationals since relocating to the United States nine months ago. There, she joined the University of Kentucky Swimming and Diving program—a move widely regarded as a pivotal step in her pursuit of international success.

Having already represented South Africa at the World Aquatics Championships at both junior and senior levels, Methula believes the competitive American collegiate system has accelerated her development.

“I definitely think I have matured as a diver and a person. I’ve also become more consistent with my dives and gained confidence more towards the championship season,” she noted.

Methula is set to contest multiple events, including the 1m and 3m springboard. She will also compete in the synchronised competition alongside fellow international diver Bailey Heydra. Despite being based at different American universities and having limited time to train together, the duo recently finished 14th overall in the synchronised 3m springboard event at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

Heydra arrives at the championships following a stellar college career in Nevada, where she won the Mountain West Conference and was named her team’s Most Valuable Diver of the season.

With several South African athletes now sharpening their skills in the U.S. collegiate system—including Grace Brammer at Penn State—the field in Boksburg is expected to be exceptionally competitive.

“My main rivals will mainly be the divers who also dive in the US,” Methula added.
