Striking Metrorail workers ready to march to Gauteng Transport MEC's office
The workers are taking part in a nationwide strike over what they say are unsafe working conditions.
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) said that Metrorail would run a limited service on Friday morning as dozens of employees across the country are expected to embark on a nationwide strike.
The parties reached an agreement earlier on Monday including an 8% wage hike, and a minimum wage entry level of R8,500.
The regulator took the decision to grant the temporary permit after Prasa's licence expired at the end of last month.
Discussions between Gautrain management and the union deadlocked on Monday afternoon.
Workers affiliated to United Transport & Allied Trade Union (Untu) went on strike after wage negotiations with Gautrain operator Bombela deadlocked on Saturday.
Talks between Untu and the Bombela company reached a deadlock on Sunday after the parties failed to reach an agreement.
Untu says it’s demanding better salaries and medical aid cover, along with other benefits.
The union wants a 12% hike for its members and has has slammed Transnet.
