Nervous residents endured a series of aftershocks, including a 5.7 quake late on Wednesday and smaller tremors early on Thursday.
The magnitude 6.4 quake, which hit near the coastal city on Tuesday, also injured 243 people and collapsed four buildings, officials said.
Residents waited and watched anxiously as emergency workers dressed in fluorescent orange and red suits and wearing helmets searched for residents trapped in apartment blocks.
According to witnesses, no casualties have been reported as yet.
The developer has been arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide following the building's collapse.
The official death toll from the quake rose to 38, with more than 100 people missing.
A 3.1 magnitude tremor hit Durban and surrounding areas at about 11:30am on Saturday.
More than 100 people are still listed as missing under a 17-storey building that collapsed.
Those found alive include a 20-year-old Huang Kuang-wei and another man in his 20s surnamed Kuo.
The 20-year-old was identified by Taiwan media as Huang Kuang-wei and was taken to hospital.
