SpaceX launches Falcon Heavy rocket with 24 satellites
The craft blasted off to cheers from onlookers at 2:30 am after a three-hour delay from the original launch time late Monday.
The unmanned robotic lander dubbed Beresheet soared into space from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at about 8:45 pm EST (0145 GMT Friday) atop the 23-story-tall rocket.
The Falcon 9 rocket carrying a roughly $500 million GPS satellite built by Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) lifted off from Cape Canaveral at 8:51 am local time.
On reaching space in SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, Ispace plans to orbit its lunar lander around the moon.
The multibillion-dollar satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a SpaceX rocket on Sunday.
Falcon Heavy will be the most powerful rocket booster in the world, capable of delivering a 54-tonne payload into orbit.
SpaceX said there were no injuries and that an ‘anomaly’ during the test resulted in the loss of the rocket.
The successful mission unfolded in just over 30 minutes and marked a pivotal reversal of fortunes.
