Singers and musicians paid tribute to Dr Richard Maponya at his funeral held at the University of Johannesburg's campus in Soweto.
Tributes poured in for Dr Richard Maponya at his funeral which was held at the University of Johannesburg's campus in Soweto. President Cyril Ramaphosa, Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Felicia Mabuza-Suttle were some of the guests that were in attendance.
President Cyril Ramaphosa says Maponya should be remembered for the role he played in the liberation of South Africa.
The business community, politicians, academics and ordinary South Africans arrived to pay their final respects to Maponya.
Maponya’s memorial service is being held at the Rosebank Union Church.
His funeral service will take place in Soweto where the distinguished entrepreneur built his legacy.
His family said they would release details around his funeral in due course.
Maponya was passionate about business and developing skills in areas that were largely neglected.
In 2007, Maponya made history, opening the Maponya Mall in Soweto which holds more than 200 stores.
The man dubbed as the father of black retail in South Africa developed the over R400 million Maponya Mall in Soweto.
