Qualcomm on 10 December said it had won a preliminary court order in China banning Apple from selling some older iPhone models that the court found violated two Qualcomm software patents.
China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are Apple’s third-largest market, accounting for about one-fifth of Apple’s $265.6 billion in sales in its most recent fiscal year.
The accusation, made in a legal filing on Tuesday, is the latest salvo in a drawn-out patent dispute between the two tech heavyweights.
Qualcomm in July accused Apple of infringing several patents related to helping mobile phones get better battery life.
The change would affect iPhones released in the fall of 2018, but Apple could still change course before then, these people said.
Apple has accused Qualcomm of overcharging for chips and refusing to pay some $1 billion in promised rebates.
The devices are expected to sell for around $300 from the end of September.
The struggling telecoms company has been hit by stiff competition in recent years.
