'From April 30 2020, any shoe must have been available for purchase by any athlete on the open retail market (online or in store) for a period of four months before it can be used in competition,' athletics' governing body said in a statement.
World Athletics expects to announce the findings of a review into the technology used in road and track shoes by the end of January.
A World Athletics spokesperson said that a committee composed of officials, athletes, doctors, scientists and legal experts, was still looking at the shoes but is expected to make recommendations by the end of January.
