The minister briefed the media on Wednesday morning about the outcomes of an independent report compiled by Ngubane tax assurance advisory firm, which confirmed that the contract was irregular and constituted fruitless and wasteful expenditure.
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has insisted that he was not involved in the awarding of the contract nor did he have any links with those who benefited.
This South African Council of Churches said that the 'Daily Maverick' report pointed to gross abuse of public funds, which had undoubtedly dented the image of the National Health Department while making a mockery of government communications.
The investigation was looking into how Mkhize's longtime personal assistant, Tehera Mather and a close associate, Naadhira Mitha, allegedly benefitted from COVID-19 contracts worth R82 million issued by the Health Department.
