MTN announced on Wednesday morning that Mupita will be taking on the role along with the title of group president.
He takes over from chief executive officer Rob Shuter who announced a while back that he would be stepping down at the end of August.

This comes after the Competition Commission released its Data Services Market Inquiry report in December, recommending that mobile networks reduce data prices or face prosecution.

Their rival Vodacom reached an agreement with the regulator to cut data prices by 30% from 1 April.
The Competition Commission said that it was in talks with MTN and Telkom to follow suit and slash their data prices.
Deputy commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu said the competition instructed Vodacom and MTN to reduce prices by at least 50% and 30%.
In December, the Competition Commission called on both network providers to reduce the price of data by the beginning of February or face prosecution.
