Mooi river plaza
N3 highway remains shut after protesters torch trucks
Just after midnight, a group of people set seven trucks alight and then fled the scene.
The violent protest is a few kilometers north of Mooi River and has forced the N3 highway to be closed in both directions.
Roads in both directions were quiet this morning with hourly vehicle rates passing Mooi River not exceeding 1,000 per hour.
All lanes at the Mooi River Toll Plaza have now been re-opened following Sunday night’s violent protest.
The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department says that truck drivers took to the highway over the employment of foreign nationals.
Clean up operations are underway and the road has now been partially re-opened.
The N3 toll route has been partially reopened with the route northbound towards Gauteng now operational.
It’s understood a group of protesters have taken the keys from truck drivers who were travelling on the route, forcing them to block traffic.
The group of detainees broke out of the van while it was travelling from Durban to Krugersdorp on Thursday morning.
As holiday makers head home after the long weekend, motorists have been urged to be cautious.
