'New evidence' in Madeleine McCann case: prosecutor
German investigators probing the disappearance of Madeleine McCann 15 years ago in Portugal have found new evidence against the chief suspect, a prosecutor told...
The parents of British toddler Madeleine McCann said they "welcome the news" that Portuguese authorities and German prosecutors have declared a convicted German rapist the prime suspect in her disappearance.
Madeleine or "Maddy", as she is known in Britain, vanished from her family's apartment in the Algarve holiday resort of Praia da Luz in 2007.
The German man's challenge had been against a conviction in Germany for the rape of a 72-year-old woman in Portugal in 2005.
Carola Titze, 16, was found dead with her body mutilated in July 1996 in a resort town on the Belgian coast.
The suspect, who was not named, is serving a 'long prison sentence' for an unrelated matter, said Germany's federal criminal agency.
It's been almost a decade since Madeleine McCann went missing while on holiday in Portugal with her parents.
The London-based inquiry into McCann’s disappearance has been running for almost six years and has cost R165 million.
The decision comes after British police began an inquiry as they believe she might still be alive.
A new inquiry in Britain is focused on thousands of phone records from the resort.
