The first batch of health care workers in the province received their COVID-19 inoculations on Friday, with the program continuing on Saturday.
There have been concerns over shortage of nurses in Limpopo, with the unions saying the province was failing to fill vacant positions.
Acting deputy director general for healthcare services Dr Abrey Lekoloana said they were planning for a worst-case scenario where new cases rise to 30,000 a week.
The province which had until late last year registered some of the lowest rates in the country battled to contain the spread of the coronavirus when an influx of residents returned to the province from South Africa’s economic hubs.
In the last 24-hour cycle, the province has recorded 1,653 positive cases.
The governing party cancelled its Limpopo celebrations due to rising COVID- 19 cases.
