Zondo hears how Parly misled on profitability of diamond mining in Alexander Bay
Alluvial diamond contractor Gavin Craythorne took the witness stand on Monday.
The state capture commission has on Monday heard how Scarlet Sky Investments had no prior experience in diamond mining and that even after it was appointed, no beneficiation was done.
Earlier, Albert Torres of Gobodo Forensic Investigations who looked into irregularities at Alexkor said most of the diamonds from the mine were sold to Scarlet Sky and no auctions were held for sales.
The state capture commission wants that money to be added to the R280 million of public money that flowed to the Guptas from the Free State government.
Researcher Paul Holden describes some of the reasons for the intricate flows: “I suspect two primary purposes; the one is to make the tracing of the funds slightly more difficult, and the second is that it creates a break for Estina, which can be used to justify if there ever was an investigation.”
