SA's De Villiers wins Dakar second stage, Alonso loses wheel
South African driver Giniel De Villiers won the second stage of the Dakar Rally on Monday.
A five-times winner on two wheels, Despres took over at the top of the car classification from earlier starter Qatari Nasser al-Attiyah who had won Saturday’s short first timed stage from Lima.
The 449km racing stage started at an altitude near 3,000 metres, but later dropped down to 1,000 metres above sea level.
The rally, which finishes in Buenos Aires on Saturday, re-enters Argentina on Tuesday.
Giniel de Villiers finished in 10th place, 29 minutes and 51 seconds off the pace.
Teammates Giniel de Villiers and navigator Dirk von Zitzewitz was fourth-fastest, and are currently in fourth place.
