Gauteng shutdown
Riverlea protest not part of Gauteng shutdown, say organisers
Residents of Riverlea in southern Johannesburg have taken to the streets on Friday morning, blocking roads with burning tyres and rocks.
It was a small turnout there with fewer than 20 people outside the JSE, demanding a stake in the country's economy.
Representatives and coordinators of the #ShutdownGauteng movement met with officials from the JSE, delivering a memorandum of demands.
Earlier on Friday, Ennerdale residents blocked the entrance to the community and refused to allow anyone in or out.
This protest comes a day after Police Minister Bheki Cele deployed over 140 officers to the Westbury area to deal with crime.
Residents from communities such as Westbury, Ennerdale and Eldorado Park are taking a stand against crime, specifically gangsterism and drug dealing.
Roads leading in and out of the community have been blocked off with burning tyres since early Friday morning.
Today's demonstrations come after angry residents took to the streets in Westbury over the killing of a woman during alleged gang violence.
