Task team set up to have charges against Fita Khupe reinstated
Gauteng community safety spokesperson Pinkie Numa says MEC Faith Maizibuko held a meeting with residents last night.
This after community members were angered the withdrawal of the case against Fita Khupe.
Vlakfontein residents met on Saturday to discuss a way forward after Mazibuko failed to pitch on Friday during a community protest.
The National Prosecuting Authority withdrew charges on Friday, saying it had no reasonable prospect of successfully prosecuting him.
The community members say they are also unhappy that they were not told that Khupe's matter was brought forward to today, instead of next week, as initially scheduled.
Fita Khupe was accused of the bludgeoning murder of seven members of the Khoza family in Vlakfontein, south of Johannesburg last year.
The case was postponed in the Protea Magistrates Court on Monday to 2 April.
Fita Khupe is accused of killing seven members of the same family in Vlakfontein in October last year and burying them at their home.
Ipid spokesperson Moses Dlamini says that because Ernest Mabaso died in police custody, they’ve stepped in to find out what exactly happened.
According to police, Ernest Mabaso hanged himself last week while in custody.
The postponement comes after the death of Khupe’s co-accused Ernest Mabaso, who reportedly hung himself in his Cape Town jail cell last week.
Police say that they discovered Ernerst Mabaso's body in his cell.
Ernest Mabaso and Fita Khupe are applying for bail after being charged with masterminding the murders of four children and three women in their family home in Vlakfontein in October.
Their case was postponed again on Tuesday at the Protea Magistrates Court due to Ernest Mabaso's ill health.
Detective Banele Ndlovu told the Protea Magistrates Court last week that the accused are a flight risk and should not be granted bail.
Last week, Sergeant Banele Ndlovu told the court that the two suspects communicated telephonically ahead of the murders of 7 members of the Khoza family in Vlakfontein.
The case against Ernest Mabaso and Fita Khupe will be heard in front of a new magistrate t at Protea Magistrates Court after being transferred from Lenasia last week.
The pair has been remanded in different prisons since Mabaso made the startling allegations earlier this month.
Ernest Mabaso and Fita Khupe are seeking to apply for bail on various charges but power outages at the Lenasia Magistrates Court have forced the case to be transferred.
