Fire season
Fire crews contain mountain blaze in Camps Bay
The City of Cape Town’s fire services, Working on Fire and Table Mountain National Parks were deployed to Lower Kloof Road.
It warns wildfires seem to be getting worse every year and conditions are still hazardous, due to drought over the past few years.
The Bureau of Meteorology warned the country could expect more heatwaves and little rain in the east during the summer, which runs from December through February, following one of the driest springs ever.
The blaze broke out in in the early hours of Sunday morning and the exact cause is still unknown at this stage.
Samwu said firefighters were supposed to work eight hours a day and about 40 hours a week. But the union complained, saying that in many cases members were working 72 to 80 hours a week without being paid overtime.
The season officially starts on 1 December in the Western Cape, but the province has already experienced several fires over the past few months.
