CT Minstrel Carnival Association in court over access to Athlone Stadium
They are trying to compel the City of Cape Town to intervene in a row over access to the Athlone Stadium.
The Western Cape High Court on Tuesday dismissed an application brought by the association.
Some minstrel parade spectators say they’ll continue supporting the traditional event, despite apparent divisions among organisers.
The municipality has recently been at loggerheads with the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association.
The City of Cape Town denied the minstrels a permit for an event in the build up to the Tweede Nuwe Jaar celebrations.
The 60 minstrel troupes, comprising of close to 30,000 minstrels, will take part in the day’s festivities.
The festival was hit with several hiccups this year & ended up taking place two weeks later than usual.
After a series of postponements and rows, the carnival looks set to go ahead.
It is the first time the Tweede Nuwejaar is not taking place the day after New Year's eve.
A minstrel group is refusing to sign an agreement with the City of Cape Town.
Organisers and local government officials will meet soon to discuss funding problems.
The colourful annual Tweede Nuwe Jaar is underway in the Mother City.
