Bushy Maape was elected premier on Tuesday, weeks after the African National Congress (ANC) had named him as its preferred candidate to take over from Job Mokgoro.
The African National Congress (ANC)'s Bushy Maape was formally elected Premier of the North West by the provincial legislature in Mahikeng on 7 September 2021. Maape replaced Job Mokgoro who resigned in August.
He has replaced Job Mokgoro who resigned last month amid tensions between himself and the ANC’s interim committee in the province.
Maape was sworn in on Wednesday after a back and forth between the party’s interim provincial committee and former premier, Job Mokgoro, who had to resign as both premier and member of the legislature to make room for the premier-elect.
This clears the way for incoming Premier Bushy Maape to be sworn in.
North West Premier Job Mokgoro has resigned a week after the African National Congress (ANC) in the province named his successor. Mokgoro said that he had met with the president on Wednesday to discuss his resignation. Mokgoro was expected to resign after the ANC's interim provincial leadership nominated Bushy Maape to replace him.
ANC spokesperson, Pule Mabe, has thanked Job Mokgoro for accepting the party's decision for him to step down.
This is according to sources, following a meeting between Duarte and Mokgoro while she also met with ANC officials from the province.
During a briefing introducing the ANC's premier candidate, Bushy Maape, the North West interim provincial committee leader, Hlomane Chauke, said that the ANC, following an assessment of the province, had concluded that new leadership was necessary.
As the African National Congress (ANC) appoints Bushy Maape to replace North West Premier Job Mokgoro, there’s still no telling whether its divided caucus will vote in support of that nomination just yet.
