Barbados declared a republic, removing Queen Elizabeth II as head of state

The new era for the nation of 285,000 ends Britain's centuries of influence, including more than 200 years of slavery until 1834.

    Barbados to replace British Queen, becomes a republic

    In October, Barbados elected Mason to become its first president, one year after Prime Minister Mia Mottley declared the country would "fully" leave its colonial past.

    City of London reviews monuments linked to slavery

    There have been nationwide calls to remove monuments linked to Britain's colonial past following the toppling of a statue of Bristol slave trader Edward Colston during an anti-racism protest in the southwestern city in June.
