Amcu President Joseph Mathunjwa says the union will embark on an unspecified industrial action at Impala Platinum if talks over the company's plans to cut a third of its workforce fail.
The company has offered workers a wage increase of 6.75% while the union is demanding 14.35%.
The company has warned those who fail to return to work face potential disciplinary action.
Striking workers are said to have torched 2 trucks and offices at the Wonderfontein Mine on Wednesday night.
Amcu has now been handed a certificate of non-resolution, meaning it can embark on a protected strike.
Solidarity says it will encourage its members to accept the latest wage offer in the gold sector.
The hardline Amcu union is demanding a more than doubling of wages from gold companies.
A restructuring is expected in South Africa’s platinum sector after a strike by Amcu which ended in June.
Amcu says its wage deal with platinum producers will be signed today.
The Labour Court has ruled against the union which was seeking permission to strike at gold mines.
The union will reveal the response by platinum companies to its additional demands in Rustenburg.
Amcu has planned a mass meeting with workers in Rustenburg this afternoon.
While it won’t say which, Sibanye Gold has publicly expressed interest in acquiring platinum mines.
Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi says the parties concerned are working very hard to resolve the strike.
