The Chinese tech giant bills the Kirin 990 chipset as the first all-in-one 5G system on a chip, describing it as superior to alternatives from Qualcomm and Samsung that, it says, graft 5G modems on to 4G chips.
Huawei’s founder Ren Zhengfei told state broadcaster CCTV that Huawei’s 5G would not be affected and predicted that no other parties would be able to catch up with the company in 5G technology in the next 2-3 years.
Huawei said the module will aid its plans to start commercialising 5G network technology for the automotive sector in the second half of this year.
Huawei faces international scrutiny over its ties with the Chinese government and suspicion that Beijing could use Huawei’s technology for spying, which the company denies.
The Chinese technology giant has defended its global ambitions and network in the face of Western fears that it could serve as a Trojan horse for Beijing's security apparatus.
