Classes remain suspended at the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in the Eastern Cape after a protest on Tuesday which saw the fatal shooting of a young man the institution says is not a registered student.

Sisonke Mbolekwa was allegedly shot by the person who manages a residence where students say living conditions are poor.

Two other students were injured and have been discharged from hospital where they were treated for minor wounds.

On Wednesday the Mthatha campus was calm although some students did gather to sing and chant, says EWN reporter Nhlanhla Mabaso.

Some students have also already left WSU to go home for Easter.

"The students today said their presence was to show support to the family of the young man they say was a fellow-student, but who the university says was not registered there."

Student leaders have called on the university to account for what happened, and for the police to make an arrest, Mabaso says.

These demands were echoed by the family of the shooting victim when they visited the campus.

Students also urging community members to look out for the alleged shooter and 'know he's a wanted suspect'.

They took members of the media to some of the residences, and Mabaso attests to the 'appalling conditions' they've raised with university management.

"There are broken toilets, broken showers, showers without taps, dirty windows you can't even see through..."
