CAPE TOWN - The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in the Western Cape has confirmed the murder of an executive member of the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA), Mongi Titi.

Titi was shot and killed at the Nyanga taxi rank on Wednesday night.

The taxi council said it was meeting with authorities to ensure that the case was handled with the urgency and seriousness it deserved.

SANTACO said it was deeply saddened and shocked by Titi's assassination.

It said Titi was a committed leader who played a significant role in ongoing efforts to build a more unified, safe, and professional taxi sector in the province.

SANTACO Western Cape is calling for a thorough investigation and is appealing to anyone with information to come forward and assist police in their investigation.

The council is also urging members of the taxi industry to remain peaceful and said that violence must not be met with violence.
