President Cyril Ramaphosa is taking a tour of the Kusile Power Station in Mpumalanga for the first time since it reached full generating capacity.

All six units at the power station are now online, producing a total of 4,800 megawatts of electricity.

The final units were brought online about a year ago, playing a key role in stabilising the country’s energy crisis.

Ramaphosa, along with Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, is unveiling the power station as fully operational.

As you drive along the N4 highway between Emalahleni and Pretoria, the massive Kusile Power Station is clearly visible, with smoke rising into the sky from its units - a sign that it is fully operational.

The power station was initially meant to be fully working by 2016, but due to delays and breakdowns, it only reached full capacity in 2025.

The coal-fired plant is one of the key reasons the electricity grid has stabilised, as it supplies a whopping 4,800 megawatts to the national grid.

While all six units are online, Kusile’s Unit One has been taken offline for planned maintenance on Friday.

About two years ago, the plant was operating at just about half its capacity due to constant unplanned breakdowns.
