Policing Summit: SAPS working with private sector to digitise docket system, increase forensic labs

President Cyril Ramaphosa has opened South Africa's first national Policing Summit, describing the event as 'critical'.
The SAPS top brass are gathered in Kempton Park in Gauteng for three days to find more effective ways of addressing the country's soaring crime rate.
"The summit brings together various stakeholders - the private sector, academics, community policing forum officials, union members and police top management all around the table to discuss how can they can better policing in South Africa."

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has advocated more involvement by the private sector and business since the start of his tenure, notes Eyewitness News reporter Orrin Singh.
In his address, the Minister highlighted priority areas for this which include digitising the docket management system and setting up more forensic laboratories.
"The Minister spoke to dockets going missing and corrupt police officials being paid off to have the dockets disappear... and the need to go paperless."

"We currently have three forensic labs - in Durban, Cape Town and Pretoria, that are all overloaded.. They're looking to establish a forensic lab in each province."

Mchunu also highlighted the Gauteng province's method of identifying the most wanted criminals and monitoring them.
Gauteng's been able to identify 450 crime kingpins involved in cash heists, hijackings, and ATM bombings.
In the past two months, 150 of these criminals have been arrested and 15 killed in police operations.
The Minister wants this modus operandi introduce in other provinces as well.
