JOHANNESBURG - A teenager in Eldorado Park, Soweto, was found with a stolen firearm on Christmas.
The 16-year-old was stopped in a routine traffic operation and arrested. He is expected to appear in court soon.
In the same raid, officials caught two men in possession of unlicensed firearms, including a shotgun.
“During the patrols, the team apprehended a 16-year-old found in possession of a firearm stolen. The serial number of the firearm was intact, aiding in its identification,” said Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Sello Maremane.
“Two additional suspects were arrested for possession of an unlicensed CZ firearm and a shotgun. The suspects failed to produce valid documentation for firearms.”
The three suspects are expected to appear in court soon after their arrests.
Two of the suspects were taken in after Gauteng traffic police responded to a community tip-off on Christmas about suspects who were discharging ammunition in public.
Provincial Traffic Police officer Obed Sibasa said the suspects were charged with multiple offences.
“Suspects charged with discharging of a firearm in public, possession of suspected stolen firearms and ammunition. The driver was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. The suspects were detained at Eldorado Park police station and will appear in court soon.”
