South Africa's new vehicle sales have picked up for the SEVENTH month in a row, despite what the Automotive Business Council calls a backdrop of escalating global economic uncertainty.

The naamsa figures for April 2025 show an increase of 11,9% year on year.

42,401 units were sold - 4,502 more than the 37,899 sold in April 2024.

Old favourite Toyota remains South Africa's top brand, with over 10,000 vehicles sold

Suzuki took second spot, with just over half that number.

Volkswagen experienced some setbacks, but still racked up the third highest tally.

While export sales declined by 6,6% year on year, exports for the year to date were still 6,3% ahead of the same period last year.

Naamsa says there is a concern that domestic vehicle exports may moderate as the full impact of the US tariffs filters through.

"Volkswagen had to stop production of the Polo and the Vivo, because they're upgrading the plant... probably contributing to the export drop."
