SuperSport channels may soon be available as a stand-alone subscription offering from MultiChoice.

The satellite television service, which operates across several African countries, offers exclusive viewing of major sports matches and events via the SuperSport channels.

SuperSport airs sports matches and events such as the Formula One, English Premier League, United Rugby Championship and all Springbok and Proteas matches.

Currently, an estimated 3.5 million households across Africa access SuperSport via the DStv platform.

Speaking to Jan Vermeulen, editor at Mybroadband.co.za says this move was inevitable, given how MultiChoice have been losing subscribers over the last few years.

"The is someone smart at MultiChoice that has looked at their declining subscriber, and there is some break-even point where it makes sense to unbundle the sports package, offer it for a little bit less...and try to win back the DStv Premium customers who have cancelled over the years."

- Jan Vermeulen, Editor at Mybroadband

"Besides the fact that it's kind of unmatched when it comes to live sports broadcasting, both in terms of that quality live stream. Live streaming, especially something as high demand as sport is difficult, and DStv has done that well."

- Jan Vermeulen, Editor at Mybroadband

"The one trump card in MultiChoice's hands, something that it can do that nobody else can do at this point, is sport."
