Mother, child fighting for life after consuming allegedly poisoned snacks

JOHANNESBURG - The mother and younger sibling of a 10-year-old girl who died after allegedly consuming snacks from a spaza shop in Johannesburg's Alexandra township, are fighting for their lives in the hospital.
On Saturday, Lesedi Maaboi brought home a packet of chips, which she shared with her four-year-old brother, Refentse, and their mother, Maria.
Shortly after eating, Lesedi began experiencing difficulty breathing, stomach cramps and severe nausea.

All three were rushed to a nearby clinic, but Lesedi was declared dead when she arrived.
Before being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit at Edenvale Hospital, Maria learned of her daughter's death.
Now, she and Refentse are battling for their lives while the family struggles to cope with the loss.
The tragedy has ignited outrage in the Alexandra community, leading locals to attempt to loot and set fire to the spaza shop where the chips were allegedly purchased.
The whereabouts of the shop owner are currently unknown, and police are investigating the incident.
